To tell the truth, life has been pretty rough as of late. I'm kind of used to it by now, but it's still rough. For those that don't know me, I'm a graphic designer by trade. I've been working in the design field in some capacity for the last 20 years. It's been a lot of fun, but things haven't been going too well in the design arena for me lately. I went back to school in 2007 and in 2009 finished my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art & Visual Communications, specializing in Graphic Design, hoping that this would help in the job search. It's been a rough road. I've looked in Utah. I moved back to Chicago for a while and looked there. And most recently, I was in Los Angeles looking there. Suffice it to say, I've been looking for a full time job for the last 5 years and nothing has really happened. My freelance work has been sparse, not enough to keep alive, so I'm back in school.
I started back looking at Business Management. After a semester, I determined that wasn't going to work for me. Then I tried what I originally started in when I first started college, Computer Science. That didn't end up working out either.
So here I am. I'm starting my way through the Theatre Arts program, with a specialty in Technical and Design. This at least is a place where I can use my design skills for something useful. And I really enjoy working on live events. When people think "Theater Major," I think the natural thought is "Oh, you're going to be an actor!" as the person sneers and laughs to themselves. Fortunately for the world, I don't think I can cut it as an actor. Too much memorizing and I'm not very good at that. (Voice acting maybe, but even then, I don't think I'm anything special when it comes to stuff like that.) I think I ultimately want to be a stage manager of something like that. I'm better behind the scenes anyhow.
So, here I go. Two years more. Who knows where this will lead. Hopefully into the Mouse. Hear that Disney folk? I'm coming for you.
